SETTING UP A WARP

Beginner’s Course!

As part of Havremagasinet’s initiative VARP & TRÅD, we are offering a beginner’s course on setting up a warp.

Over the course of four weekends, we will cover all the steps needed to dress a loom. Together, we will set up warps on the looms in the studio, giving you the skills to plan your own projects, either at home or for a later weaving period during VARP & TRÅD.

datES AND SCHEDULE

The schedule may shift slightly as different steps can overlap.

feb 14, 12-16

Warping & Sleying

Warping: Introduction to the warping frame. You will learn how to warp and remove the warp from the frame. We will focus on warping the looms in the studio

Sleying: Before threading the warp through the heddles, the threads are distributed through the reed. (Some schools use a beater, but here we will sley.)

feb 15, 12-16

Threading & Heddling

Threading: Time to introduce the looms and thread the warp onto the loom’s warp beam.

Heddling: Each thread must be passed through the heddle eyes according to the pattern required by the weave structure.

21 feb kl. 12-16

Beating & Tying the Front

Beating: Threads are distributed through the reed to ensure they lie evenly; this determines width and thread density.

Tying the Front: Once the above steps are complete, the warp is tied to the cloth beam, ensuring even tension.

22 feb, 12-16

Treadle Tie-Up & Advancing the Warp

Treadle Tie-Up: The final step before weaving is tying the treadles to lift the correct threads according to the weave pattern.

Advancing the Warp: At the start of the weaving, a few rows are woven to distribute the threads evenly and check for errors in heddling or sleying.

Ida Isak Westerberg (b. 1986, Sunderbyn) holds a degree from the Higher Textile Craft Education at Handarbetets Vänner and works as a textile artist in Luleå and Övertorneå. Westerberg focuses on site-specific processes, where their creations take shape and gain nuance through a dynamic interaction between materials and their responses to particular environments. Collaborating with nature – most notably the Sompasenvuona marsh in Tornedalen as a recurring co-creator – their sculptural weavings carry tactile traces of history, while also exploring themes of belonging, shifting desires, and queer identities.
