Erling Johansson

In this duo exhibition, Norrbotten artists Erling Johansson (b 1932) and Olof Marsja (b 1986) come together and share an ample and varied selection of works. Although of different generations, both artists have their roots in the municipality of Gällivare. Their cultural and linguistic kinship resonates in their art, highlighting the region’s cultural complexity.

about the artist

Erling Johansson was born in 1934 in Sarvisvaara, in Gällivare parish. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1955-1960 and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki from 1961 – 1963. He was a teacher at the Gerlesborg Art School for 15 years, where he taught portraiture. Erling Johansson’s art has been exhibited in Sweden and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. His works are in public and private collections such as the National Museum and Moderna Museet, the portrait collection at Gripsholm Castle, the City of Stockholm, Region Norrbotten, and others. His work is also in collections in Finland, France, Germany, and the USA. Erling Johansson has received numerous scholarships, prizes, and awards in Sweden and France. In 2005 he was appointed honorary doctor at Luleå University of Technology.
