About Havremagasinet

Havremagasinet Länskonsthall Boden – one of Sweden’s largest spaces for contemporary art.

A building with 3600 square meters at your disposal creates unique opportunities to meet and engage with art. In addition, our exhibitions address some of the most pressing issues of our time.

We invite artists from Norrbotten, Sweden, and the world in our ongoing exhibition activities. Complementing our exhibitions are a lively program and extensive educational activities: we have a café offering drinks and home-baked delights, a studio to test how it is to think through the materials of art, and a stage for concerts, performances, and other activities. The name Havremagasinet links to the unique history of the building and its former function from when the Armed Forces used it to store oats and grain for horses.

Since the first exhibition at the gallery, we have worked with contemporary art that highlights current global issues and our specific context here in Norrbotten and the Barents region. It can be about migration, democracy, the climate crisis, human rights, integration, and minority issues – or simply what it is like to live on earth today.

Founded in 2010 by Kilen’s artists’ initiative with a vision of becoming a center for contemporary art in Norrbotten, and since then, organized many exhibitions and countless programs and meetings under its roof.  As a regional art gallery, we also have a regional mission and carry out many different projects around the county. If you cannot visit us in person, it is possible to take part in parts of our program and exhibitions remotely. If you want to know more, read here: (link).

The activities are made possible by support from Boden municipality, Region Norrbotten, and everyone who visits the art gallery.

WHY CONTEMPORARY ART?

We see contemporary art as a critical, remarkable, and unique language for addressing the significant issues of the planet, the world, society, and the individual – our problems and challenges in the present.

Havremagasinet is a place where, through exhibitions and programs, audiences can experience, think and reflect, and challenge themselves and find new perspectives on life. Thus, art becomes a starting point to help us put things into words, comprehend the incomprehensible, and identify and reflect on our individual and collective existence in the world.
